The School Parliament elections of Don Bosco High School & Junior College, Oros was held on 20 June 2026. The process of election is more than just electing the representative it gives them the firsthand experience of leadership and democracy and also understanding the weight of this responsibility.
The election process involves the submission of the application by the interested candidates. The election is done on four levels: Primary, Middle school, secondary and the Junior college. Head boy and girl is chosen from Primary and secondary while the Cultural Ministers and Sports Minister are chosen from Secondary Section. From College section we have General Secretaries, Cultural Secretaries and Sports Secretaries. The applications from all the candidates are screened by the teachers. The application of only promising candidates is chosen. These candidates are given the voting numbers.
The excitement starts ascending when the candidates are campaigning for themselves with the posters. This is the opportunity to them for interacting with the other students. They go to different classes and ask for votes. Candidates are also given a day where they can address their section in assembly and convince the voters how they can be good leaders and what they will do for the betterment of school. This helps them to develop confidence, communication skill and public speaking.
Finally on the day of elections, the students cast their votes. This time, for the first time ever, we had computerised voting by using the voting machine EVM application in our school. It was first time that our young voters got to learn how actually voting is done. Students enjoyed this experience and found it interesting. The votes were then disclosed by the Principal, Rev. Fr. Melwin Ferrao in the presence of student’s representatives.
The elected leaders were installed in the grand ceremony on the feast day of St. Dominic Savio, held on 6th July. The leaders took the oath that they will strive for the betterment of school and welfare of all the students. As a teacher, we guide students in their journey of being the leader. School elections are therefore not merely selecting leaders but also to prepare the responsible citizen who will understand the value of democracy.
